Rahul Gandhi lost to BJP candidate Smriti Irani by a margin of over 55,000 votes.
Sources told India Today TV that Gandhi told a group of senior Congress leaders including his mother Sonia that he takes full responsibility for the election defeat and that he is willing to resign as the party's president.
However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala denied the reports of Rahul Gandhi offering to resign.
Congress in this election suffered a defeat at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP.
The grand old party could only manage to get 49 seats while leading on other three seats, whereas the BJP repeated its 2014 landslide victory with winning nearly 300 seats so far.
